Losing a parent, spouse, or sibling is one of the hardest things a family goes through. On top of the grief, someone eventually has to walk through the house and decide what to do with a lifetime of belongings. This checklist is the process we've watched hundreds of Central PA families use — take it at your pace, and don't feel pressured to do it in a single weekend.

Step 1 — Slow down. Nothing needs to happen this week.
Before anything is thrown out or donated, take a breath. Give yourself a week or two just to be in the house, sit with your feelings, and let other family members visit. Anything you regret throwing out can't be undone.
Step 2 — Secure the important paperwork
- Will, trust documents, and life insurance policies
- Deeds, vehicle titles, and property records
- Bank, brokerage, retirement, and pension statements
- Tax returns from the last 7 years
- Safe-deposit box keys and small-safe combinations
- Passwords and account lists if any exist
Step 3 — Walk the home with family and tag what stays
Bring immediate family through once, together if possible. Identify photos, jewelry, watches, firearms (transferred per PA law), military items, religious objects, and one or two pieces of furniture with real meaning. Tag them and remove them from the clear-out plan.
Step 4 — Sort what's left into three buckets
- Donate — usable furniture, household goods, and clothing
- Sell — high-value antiques, collectibles, tools, and vehicles (estate sale or auction)
- Haul — everything else
Step 5 — Schedule a single-day cleanout when you're ready
For most Central PA homes, a professional crew can empty the property in one organized day. Our team flags valuables and documents you may have missed, coordinates donations, and sweeps every room clean before leaving.
Step 6 — Prep the property for sale, rent, or family use
Once the home is empty, next steps are usually a deep clean, minor repairs, and a realtor walkthrough. If accessibility upgrades are needed for a family member moving in, our aging-in-place install team can handle grab bars, ramps, and railings the same week.
